Back in the Game: Gabe’s Journey with Dr. Schock
Growing up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Gabe LaFreniere was always on the move. Between football and hockey, the Iron Mountain native lived for competition. But a devastating knee injury during football changed everything.
“I hurt my right knee playing football and ended up needing surgery,” Gabe shared. “Dr. Schock repaired my MCL and MPFL in October of 2021, and then my ACL a few months later in January 2022.”
The back-to-back surgeries tested Gabe both physically and mentally.
“It was tough. I was walking again and starting to feel normal after the first surgery, and then I had to go right back under for another,” he said. “You go from training every day to sitting on the couch icing your knees—it’s isolating.”
A family friend, physical therapist, Dr. Chris Moore of Iron Mountain, connected Gabe with Dr. Schock.
“Dr. Moore knew Dr. Schock through hockey,” Gabe explained. “When I got hurt, he got me in touch with him right away.”
Even though the drive from Iron Mountain to Green Bay was nearly two hours, Gabe says it was worth it.
“Dr. Schock and his team were amazing. They treated me really well and set me up for the best recovery possible,” Gabe said. “His PA, Alyssa, was great too—she went above and beyond to help me with everything.”
“Rehabilitation is just as important as the surgery itself,” Dr. Schock said. “Gabe committed to the process, and that dedication is why he had such an outstanding outcome.”
“He’s a great kid—focused, hardworking, and determined to feel better and stronger,” Dr. Schock added. “When patients bring that kind of attitude to recovery, it makes all the difference.”
“As surgeons, we can repair ligaments and stabilize joints, but true success comes from teamwork,” Dr. Schock explained. “Gabe’s effort in rehab and his positive mindset was key to getting him back to the activities he loves.”
Now a college student at Michigan Tech majoring in finance, Gabe’s competitive spirit hasn’t changed. Between studying and outdoor hobbies like hunting, fishing, and hiking, he’s focused on staying active as he continues to heal.
Recently, Gabe returned to see Dr. Schock for a partial PCL tear in his other knee. Despite the setback, his optimism remains strong.
“I’ve been through this before,” he said. “I know I’m in good hands.”
Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Schock and his dedicated team at BayCare Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Gabe is determined to get back on the ice soon—and back to doing what he loves most.
