Aurora BayCare Medical Center recently welcomed girls ages 8 to 18 for its fourth annual YWCA TechGYRLS program, an interactive event designed to introduce young women to careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). The program provides participants with a behind-the-scenes look at healthcare professions while encouraging them to explore career paths they may not have previously considered.
Featuring gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Elizabeth Dickson, and her infamous robot used to do robotic surgeries, the event included many specialty healthcare providers, as well as hands-on activities and demonstrations that gave students experience with tools and techniques commonly used in medicine. Participants also had the opportunity to meet providers from a variety of specialties and learn about their unique career journeys.
The goal of this event is to help students connect what they learn in school to real-world careers. By seeing women working successfully in healthcare and other technical fields, empowers young women to envision themselves pursuing similar paths in the future. Watch the Health Watch segment.
