Meet Dr. Kody Wyant: A Passion for Cardiac Surgery and Patient Care

Choosing a career in medicine is often a journey shaped by inspiration, curiosity, and a desire to make a difference. For Dr. Kody Wyant, that journey began early and led to a fulfilling role as a cardiac surgeon at BayCare Clinic.

A Lifelong Interest in Medicine

“I’ve always been interested in medicine as far back as I can remember,” Dr. Wyant shares.

Growing up with family members who worked as nurses, particularly in the operating room. Medicine was on his radar early.

“I always wanted a career where I could help people. I’ve always enjoyed science and working with my hands, and I thought this was the right career path. So, I kind of just fell into it.”

Why Cardiac Surgery?

Early in medical school, Dr. Wyant knew he wanted to pursue a surgical specialty.

“I had a really good experience with a mentor who was a cardiac surgeon,” Dr. Wyant said. “He took me under his wing, and I was able to see surgeries early on and witness the impact cardiac surgery had on people’s lives. I was hooked.”

His areas of focus today include coronary disease and surgical treatment of lung cancer, combining technical expertise with compassionate care.

Finding a Home at BayCare Clinic

When asked what attracted him to BayCare Clinic, Dr. Wyant emphasizes the culture.

“I felt it had a very family-like atmosphere,” Dr. Wyant said. During the interview process, everyone I met was warm, friendly, and inviting. I could tell that people enjoyed coming to work every day.”

A Patient-Centered Approach

Dr. Wyant’s philosophy is rooted in honesty, empathy, and genuine connection.

“I try to be open and honest with patients, listen to their concerns, and address every question they have to the best of my ability,” he explains.

For him, care goes beyond treatment, it’s about understanding the person behind the patient.

“The most rewarding part of my work is getting to know patients,” Dr. Wyant adds. “Learning their story, what’s important to them, and helping them continue doing those things or get back to them, that’s what I enjoy most.”

A Story That Stays With Him

One experience during Dr. Wyant’s training stands out.

“There was a young gentleman who needed a lung transplant,” Dr. Wyant shared. He grew up in an area of Illinois close to me, though we didn’t know each other. He had three or four instances where his transplant was canceled. Finally, on the last attempt, I happened to be on call and was able to do the transplant. He did really well. Seeing him go from being very sick with cystic fibrosis to returning home to his young family and watching his life turn around in a few weeks was really special.”

Life Outside the OR

When he’s not in surgery, Dr. Wyant enjoys golfing, cooking, exploring new restaurants, and traveling with his wife and family—both in the U.S. and internationally. Recently, he’s been perfecting homemade pizza, though pasta and Italian dishes have also been favorites.

Despite being surrounded by green and gold, Dr. Wyant proudly sticks to his roots.

“People might be surprised that I’m a Chicago Bears fan living in Packer's country!” he laughs.
