Proactive Screening Leads to Early Breast Cancer Diagnosis for Jaime Fehrman

Jaime Fehrman’s awareness of her family’s breast cancer history prompted her to take action—leading to an early diagnosis at age 39 through the high-risk breast cancer program at Aurora BayCare.

After discussing her mother’s diagnosis with her primary care provider, Fehrman was referred to the high-risk program, which offers advanced screening tools such as MRIs and genetic testing. These enhanced options played a critical role in identifying her cancer early.

“I was completely taken aback,” Fehrman said about her diagnosis. “I really didn’t think anything was going to be wrong and it was a fairly large tumor.”

Enhanced Screening and Personalized Care

The program provides eligible patients with increased screening, including ultrasounds and MRIs, as well as access to genetic testing. Participants also meet with medical oncology to explore preventive treatment options.

As part of her care plan, Fehrman began alternating annual mammograms with MRIs every six months. It was an MRI—not a mammogram—that ultimately detected her tumor.

“Everything was really laid out very quickly, and you could sense the urgency with the clinic,” Fehrman said, reflecting on the responsiveness of her care team.

The Power of Early Detection

Currently completing chemotherapy and preparing for surgery, Fehrman stresses the importance of understanding one’s family medical history and being an advocate for personal health.

“I’m incredibly thankful,” Fehrman said. “If I had never made that appointment with the high-risk clinic, I would be in a much more dire situation.”

Her journey highlights the value of early detection and the impact of proactive healthcare for individuals at elevated risk of breast cancer.
